Presbytery partners with Heifer in Middle East

This Project seeks to focus the resources of the Presbytery of Cincinnati and Heifer International in two particularly deserving locations in the remote Shiite Muslim country of Azerbaijan.  The two recently approved heifer projects, the Masali Livestock Development and Yardimili Livestock Projects, are on the extreme south of the country, within a few miles of Iran.

About Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan itself is an interesting country with a long history.  At various times, it has fallen within control of the Persian Empire, the Mongols, the Ottomans, and the Russians.  In the 19th century Azerbaijan was the source of 50% of the world's oil.  Petroleum is till important, and a pipeline for Caspian Sea oil runs from the country's capital in Baku through Georgia on into Turkey.  However, Azerbaijan's gross domestic product in only $7,500 per capita compared with $46,000 for the United States.  29% of its population lives below the poverty line.

The Projects

The Masali Project plans to provide 30 heifers to 30 families in villages near the town of Masali, and to help them raise the heifers.  In 2010 they will give 30 new heifers to other families in the district.  That project will require $161,442 and will run through 2012.

The Yardimli Project will provide 22 heifers and 15 beehives to 27 families near the town of Yardimli.  An additional 27 families will benefit from "passing on the gift."  This project will need $102,658 and will also continue until 2012.

The Promotors

With the approval of the Presbytery council, the project will be promoted by a network initially composed of Directors of Religious Education in the larger churches in the Presbytery, working in collaboration with the mission committees of those churches.  Presentations on the project will be made in as many churches as feasible, and individual churches will be encouraged to create special programs using materials provided by Heifer.

Our Plan

Our plan is for each participating church to send contributions directly to Heifer International, identified as Part of the "Presbytery of Cincinnati Heifer Azerbaijan Project."  Heifer will thank the church directly, indicating ho much has been raised to date for the project.  Heifer will also report the contribution by e-mail to project organizer Dusty Anderson (Knox), and he will forward a copy to the Presbytery and to all of the other participating churches.  In the event that contributions exceed the amount required, the funds will be distributed to other heifer projects elsewhere in the world.

The intent is to increase enthusiasm for Heifer projects by focusing on two particularly deserving communities in a fascinating part of the world.
