On October 16th, 2011 a team of 19 missionaries trekked to
Nashville, Tennessee, for a week to provide sweat, talent,
love and compassion to help rebuild hope and housing for
families affected by flooding in the spring of 2010.
Volunteers came from seven churches throughout the
presbytery and we were bolstered in our efforts by an $8,400
local mission grant from the presbytery. Some missionaries
had been on as many as seven trips previously, for others,
this was a first. We were hosted in fine fashion by
Westminster Presbyterian Church, Nashville, where we were
provided a comfortable bed, showers and delicious, bountiful
meals; but especially warm southern hospitality. The work
included flooring, deck building, painting and much adapting
to shifting conditions. All was done conscientiously,
willingly and lovingly by tireless crews. Seven homes were
worked-on and three homeowners were able to once again
occupy their homes after being displaced for 18 months.
Grace and gratitude abounded as was demonstrated each
evening during vespers culminating in a service of sharing
at the Lord’s Table on Thursday evening. We returned wearied
but satisfied on Friday with many of us anxious to “do it
again as soon as possible.” Plans are already being formed
for a spring trip. Stay tuned. Maybe God is calling you to
pick up a hammer or paint brush and join us.
