2011 Annual Report |
The
Committee on Ministry (COM) functions effectively by employing
strong Cluster teams, whose direct relationships with congregations
and pastors are the backbone of our work. In the past year Cluster
leadership included Sharon Wilcox and then Bob Clary in the West,
Wayne Speer in the North, David Zuidema in the Northeast, Kevin
Murphy in the South, Bob Weston in the Southeast, and Barbara Jean
Havens in the Far East and relating to Commissioned Lay Pastors, now
called Ruling Elders Commissioned to Pastoral Service. Our thanks to
each of these leaders for their excellent work!
One tool we have to strengthen relationships with congregations is
the Triennial Visit. When members of the Committee on Ministry can
visit routinely with Sessions in non-crisis situations it builds
relationships and provides us opportunity to fulfill the purpose
statement printed above. We’ve worked intentionally to accomplish
Session visits in timely fashion.
The Committee on Ministry is too often affected by congregations’
lack of trust of the Presbytery. The reasons for this are myriad;
some of them are very good reasons. We spend much time repairing
relationships and seeking ways to specifically contribute to
effective ministry in the local congregation.
Strong support of Interim Ministry is one such contribution.
Currently we’re helping congregations to see the wide range of
capable and available interim pastors, both within this Presbytery
and through the Association of Presbyterian Interim Ministry
Specialists. We value the network of Interims serving currently in
this Presbytery, and thank Hart Edmonds and others for their good
work.
Presbytery by-laws call for 33 members of Committee on Ministry; we
have 25 currently, including 9 Ruling Elders. More Ruling Elders on
COM would help! Our greatest need, however, is not for more people,
but for a commitment within Presbytery as a whole to the purpose and
value of the work we do.
Special thanks to Janis Adams, whose steady work as Stated Clerk has
kept us focused on tasks and the re-write of our Job Description
triggered by Form of Government changes. Thanks to Erwin Goedicke
who serves as our Secretary and does an excellent job. Thanks to
Bill Lindsay, who is our CLC (Church Leadership Connection) computer
liaison. Thanks to Jim DiEgidio, who as General Presbyter is often
called into a crisis too late but does a great job of finding the
best way through tough situations.
